Story by Josie Carr

A story by Josie Carr:
There was a brisk wind blowing though the open window in the room; it  was  bright  with  sunlight shining. As I was finishing packing up my last bag, I  suddenly heard the dog in the front yard barking like someone had driven up the driveway! As I ran though the house, stubbing my toe on a chair, I ignored the pain and kept running on one foot. It was Hayden's mom driving up the driveway to drop her off. It was going to be the best weekend ever because the whole riding team was going on a camping trip with the coach. It was going to be the best camping trip of my life; we are family and stick together like sisters. I said, "Hayden, so glad you are here early!  You can help me get the last of my stuff packed!" After Hayden said bye to her mom for the weekend, we went inside to get my bag packed.  When we were finished, I hollered up the stairs to my sister, "Alex, are you ready to go catch horses?  If you want, Hayden and I can catch your horse." Alex replied with a firm, "Yes, that would be great if y'all don't mind."  When we walked outside, Hayden's horse, Candy, had untied her rope from the hitching post. She had gotten really good at that.  As Hayden tied her horse back up we went out to catch the two horses for my sister and I.  After 10 minutes of walking the fields we found the horses hiding away in the thick, luscious woods trying to stay cool as the wind swooped through the trees blowing a funnel of leaves high into the sky. It had been 95 degrees for the past three days and it was hot.  Hayden and I had sweat dripping off of us as we put the halters on the horses and began to lead them back to the barn.  We dropped the scoop off at the barn and we also went to the water trough to let the horses drink for a minute. We then led them to the hitching post to tie them up so we could get the trailer loaded with saddles, bridles, food and bags. The reason Hayden had come to my house before we met all of the other girls was because the horse campground was 30 minutes away from my house so we were saving gas and letting her and her horse ride with us. After we got all of our work done we loaded the horses and headed off.  The whole way there Alex, Hayden, my Mom, and I were so excited about what was going to come we drove for the next thirty minutes talking hurriedly.  We came up the camp ground, checked in, and got the key to the cabin!  We drove through the camp until we made it to the cabin.  We unloaded the horses and as they backed off the trailer we saw all the sweat dripping off of them and tied them to the trailer so they could get a breeze and cool down.  We were the first ones there so we were responsible for getting camp set up.  We had to do things like get our bags to our beds and get the picket line up so we could move the horses out of the blazing sun and into the breezy shade. They need to cool down before you can give them a drink of water, but you never want a hot horse to drink water because there could be the risk of them colicking and that could kill them. As I came out of the cabin I heard the really squeaky door and felt the hot, humid breeze on my face as the bright sun shone in my eyes and blinded me for a second.  As I regained my vision, I saw the rest of the girls had just pulled up and I ran and gave Rachael and Lora Lee a big, huge hug.  We were all just so excited for the extreme fun to begin. As we unloaded the horses and tied them to the picket line, we looked over our shoulders and saw Mrs. Brandy drive up with her daughter, Tayla, (but we call her Tally). I have ridden with Brandy since I was 6.  She taught me everything I know about horses and vaulting so she has been this huge part of my life and I never want to lose her; we all love her to death. Finally, everything was unpacked from the trailers and put into the cabin. We brought our corn hoe boards so we all could kill time while my dad cooked up supper.  As we grew tired of the game, it grew darker in the night sky and the smell of the smoke filled our noses but smelled so good .  It was finally dark enough and we went and got our horses and cut open glow sticks and finger painted the horses as we rode around the campground lighting and glowing the path.  We walked in and saw a lot of little kids and grownups looking surprised and amazed. So far it was the best weekend I could ask for and then, that night, it all went south.  We all went to bed and not a sound filled the air.  In the next moment a very loud scream filled the air and Rachael , Lora Lee and I jumped to our feet with startled looks on our faces.  As we ran outside the tent and looked into the other tent, Alex and Hayden were gone.  We ran inside the cabin and all the grownups were asleep, so we went back outside to look for them. We looked and looked and Lora Lee was gone too, Rachael and I looked at each other and stayed close together so neither one of us would vanish.  We could smell the pine trees and feel the morning cold and see the sun peeking up in the morning sky.  We were scared out of our minds.  We heard a rustle in the creek just a little way behind the horses picket line, and as we shook with fear and the cold morning air we looked over the bank and there stood the 3 girls laughing their heads off. Rachael and I realized at the end of the day that it was funny, but we didn't at the time! Looking back at the end of the weekend and reflecting on everything we decided we all had the best weekend ever!!!
The End!
